To local residents who may survive this seismic event - those who would surely have substantial claims against the county and the resultant toxic exposures from  Brightwater –  would very likely encounter quickly depleted county resources, no state insurance authority and have no recourse.

Or we wait, like New Orleans, for FEMA  while we die horrible deaths from chemical exposures.

Is this a model for democracy or a brave new  world?

Follow the Money Honey...

It does not  take a rocket scientist to understand such an event would cause the existing financial and emergency response infrastructures in place to quickly fail completely.

Would or should local residents count on the federal government and FEMA to rescue them as happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina?

These concerns closely resonate with the New Orleans debacle and government response to resident safety surrounding catastrophic readiness.  Instead of millions of gallons of salt water there would instead be a smorgasbord of toxic waste devastating the entire Woodinville area.

Like New Orleans there is a disturbing and continued laissez-faire response to proactive efforts to prevent disaster before it occurs.

The revenue base the county model derives from the scores of sewer hookups levied against the whirlwind of local development and residents would be largely futile as it would abruptly become nonperforming.

Is King County’s insured for all this?

Critics say King County is taking the position that since they have already expended $300 million dollars, they may as well spend the $1.62 billion budget (originally $1.35 billion) and finish the project so they don’t waste what they have already spent - or - the ends justifies the means approach.

Most area residents of the past 100 years have an earthquake perspective of rollers’n shakers.

In stark contrast the SouthernWhidbey Island Fault has the potential for one side to rise up to 10 feet over the other.  (Geological evidence for this amount of ground shift was found on Whidbey Island and in one of the USGS trenches at the Brightwater HWY 9 site).  This is something that may only have been experienced before written history occurred in the area

One thing for certain - it would be a monumental task to construct a building capable of withstanding six to ten feet of displacement on a surface fault beneath its foundation.

King County is "self-insured"

A review of King County’s liability coverage in the event of a catastrophic event shows King County as “self-insured.”

Self-insured means the self-insured entity has met established gatekeepers of monetary fluency to qualify. It also means that the Washington State Insurance Commissioner no longer has any jurisdiction.
